The last time the USA Men’s Hockey team won gold at the Olympics was the “Miracle on Ice” team in 1980, exactly 46 years ago to date. In the midst of a celebration with FBI Director Kash Patel, the victory-high team got on a phone call with President Donald Trump that would turn any conversation about the team from one of celebration to criticism.
During the brief phone call with Trump, the President made a joke at the USA Women’s Hockey team’s expense. After many congratulations to the men’s team and an invitation to his State of the Union address, Trump reluctantly added, “I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team.” He stated that he would likely be impeached if he did not invite the women’s team to his SOU address the following day.
Backlash soon flooded the internet in defense of the women’s team, with many posting and sharing videos about their disappointment with the men’s behavior and the double standards women in sports have to deal with every day. A large portion of the reverberations was directed at Quinn and Jack Hughes, the latter of whom made a statement on Feb. 23.
“People are so negative out there, and they are trying to find a reason to put people down and make something out of almost nothing,” he told “The New York Times. “I think everyone in that locker room knows how much we support them, how proud we are of them.”
Many were not shocked that Hughes made a statement so soon after the backlash, given that his mother is a player development consultant for the women’s team, a team she used to play for. Ellen Weinberg-Hughes released her take on what happened in the locker room in a “USA Today” editorial on Feb. 25. “People that cheered on that don’t watch hockey, people that have politics on one side or on the other side, and that’s all both the men’s team and the women’s team care about,” Weinberg-Huges said.
Not long after, support for the Women’s team flooded the internet from fans and brands alike, prompted by Flavor Flav, rapper and television personality, who offered to invite every female Olympic and Paralympic medalist to Las Vegas for dinners, parties, and a concert. The rapper posted to social media, “I wanna invite ALL the female Olympic and Paralympic medalists from the United States out to Las Vegas, and we got you covered.”
Brands were quick to jump on the train for the golden marketing opportunity. Cosmetic companies like Maybelline, Nyx, and Stila Cosmetics offered to provide the athletes’ glam, while clothing outlets, including Belk, Lululemon, and Stitchfix, volunteered to be on outfit duty.
The support did not stop there, though. On Feb. 28, alongside the Heated Rivalry star Connor Storie, the men’s and women’s hockey teams appeared on “Saturday Night Live” and showed the world that they were once again on good terms by turning the President’s joke into the punchline. Upon bringing out Hilary Knight and Megan Keller, the former joked, “It was going to be just us, but we thought we’d invite the guys too.”
Soon after, Quinn and Jack Hughes graced the screen, laughing alongside their female colleagues. It was the full-circle moment that allowed both teams to cement their support for each other alongside their legacies as athletes.
