Despite the tough loss, the Montclair High School basketball team delivered one of the most memorable seasons in the program’s history. With dominant and standout performances, the team orchestrated a deep and exciting playoff run that thrilled its local fan base.
The team started the season hot, going 6-0 in their first few games, beating out schools including Irvington, West Essex, and Newark East Side. Winning by comfortable margins, they quickly established themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the state.
This run was ultimately a team effort of coordination and determination, but the stars of the show were seniors La’mear Singletary and Mason Detterman. The two scored a total of 426 and 444 points, respectively, signifying their skill and strength on the court.
The entire team’s hard work and determination in the regular season was rewarded with a 17-9 record and the top seed entering the Section 1 Group 4 playoffs.
In the first round against Livingston, Montclair struggled, but came away with a nail-biting 62-59 win. The second round, however, reinforced why Montclair was the top seed entering these playoffs, winning in a decisive 56-44 game.
Unfortunately, it all came to a halt on March 3rd against neighbor rival East Orange High in a 56-51 loss.
This season was one to remember for the team. It was the furthest the team had advanced into the playoffs in over 15 years. Head coach Cecil Stinson has now had 4 straight years of making the playoffs since he was hired, likely cementing his place as the coach of this team for years to come.
Under the coach’s leadership, the players came through with a fiery offense and a hard-stopping defense. They averaged 61.8 points of offense per game while only allowing 57.8 points.
This season definitely meant a lot for the team, but it also meant a great deal for the school and community surrounding.“It means a lot for our program and the community,” coach Stinson told the Montclair Local after the loss to East Orange. “I am proud of these guys for giving to our community.”
Now, while the loss to East Orange ended the season, it does little to overshadow the accomplishment of this team. A combination of leadership, teamwork, and the support of its fan base took this team to one of the deepest playoff runs they have seen in years. Even with many seniors leaving, this season will establish a competitive and winning culture for the team going forward.
